Halloween is Tomorrow!! Make sure to find a haunted house in your area to get in the Halloween spirit. Here’s just one of the many spook zones you’ll find in Michiana.
The Niles Scream Park

The Michiana area is not lacking on Haunted Houses, Haunted Hayrides and corn mazes. In fact, Niles Michigan has its own Niles Haunted House Scream Park. This park alone brings in over 100,000 dollars in revenue, almost all of which was donated to local charities and school events, such as to name a few the Niles Football Teams, the Niles High School Yearbook, the American Cancer Society, the local Girl Scout troops and St. Jude’s Research Hospital.
So besides being a great charity event for the community, what is all the fuss about with this Scream Park? To begin, this park is on 44 acres of land requiring 150 to 200 people a night to yell, scare you and guarantee you with a night of terror! In fact, this place is so popular that in October 2008, the Park celebrated with their One Millionth visitor.
:
Several Amusement Options
There are numerous attractions:
- The Haunted House: the biggest and scariest in the area
- Dark Terror-Tory Haunted Hayride: a one mile narrated ride
- Field of Screams with Maniac Maze
- Midway of the Macabre: enjoy various games and fun, including a paint ball shooting gallery
- Concessions
- Gore Store: with all your favorite Halloween fun stuff
- Psychic Readings: haven’t had enough fun and scariness, have your palm read
- And a few other fun events, including the Redneck Revenge and London Screams after Midnight.
The Haunted House has multiple routes and more than 100 possible paths. You would have to go through this house at least 7 times to catch everything. The displays and the routes are both changed every year for those returning visitors.
Age Appropriate
In one word, this place is scary. It is not appropriate for young children. The attraction is geared to scare high school and college age kids. The hayride and midway attractions are a little different, but still are not recommended for children under the age of 6. Obviously if your child is afraid of the dark, this is not the place to visit.
Special Packages
To keep the costs affordable, there are special packages, such as the Triple Dog Dare, where you can get a trip through the Haunted House, Redneck Revenge and London Screams (the other two main attractions). You can also individually purchase each of the attractions or tokens for the Midway attractions.
Find It Local!
The Scream Park is located just near Highway 31, just off Niles Buchanan Road on Mayflower road. Moreover, the website claims it is worth the drive from Kalamazoo or Indiana. If you do all the activities, you can be guaranteed a few hours of scares! Happy Haunting!

What is Cash for Clunkers?
The official name for Cash for Clunkers is the Car Allowance Rebate System or “CARS.” It is a 3 billion dollar government program that helps consumers buy or lease a more environmentally friendly vehicle by trading in a less fuel-efficient car or “clunker.” The goal of this program was to have more fuel-efficient and cleaner cars on the highways.
What are Some of the Requirements?
However, in order to participate in this program, there are many requirements. The car you are trading in must be eligible.
- First, your car must be less than 25 years old and should get less than 18 miles per gallon.
- Second, you need to be the owner of this car with a clear title and have a proof of insurance. All of these requirements go back a year, you must have owned this car and had it insured for over a year.
- Third, your trade-in car must be scrapped. The dealer will disclose to you the amount of the scrap value. With this amount 50 dollars will be subtracted for dealer fees, the remaining amount is your rebate.

How is it Affecting the Car Market?
While this should be a helpful stimulus project for the country, it is unclear if it is really helping. First, there are so many requirements that the average person may not be able to benefit from this deal. As explained above, your car must meet the requirements, but you must also have the appropriate credit to get a car.
You have to be able to acquire financing and be able to pay for this brand new car. While this system does help an individual get a nicer car, some individuals are driving these older cars because they cannot afford a new car. This may place an individual in a difficult situation, instead of helping them.
For the car dealerships, it is definitely keeping them busy. However, it is also a cumbersome system for the dealers to follow. What are some of the benefits?
- The local BMW dealers have been able to expand their target market. For example with the cash for clunkers deal (up to $4,500) and other incentives, you can get up to $10,000 off the purchase of a new BMW. With this discount, this car may be more affordable.
- In a California dealership, it was shown that they were averaging 40 sales per day, instead of the 12 average they usually had due to the interest in this program.
- In the Michiana area, it was reported that the calls on the program started before the official start date. The most common sale in the Michiana area has been the older car worth only about $1,000 being traded for a new car.
What are Some of the Disadvantages?
The program is time consuming. While the individual may already have their car, the dealership is still waiting on the government rebates. After the dealer processes all the forms, it has to wait for the federal government to review, process the applications, forms and then release the money.
Also reported in Michiana are problems for the used car dealers and the salvage yards. While the salvage yards may be busy destroying the old clunkers, they may also be destroying cars that someone could buy. For example, a 1995 Ford Explorer could meet the requirements of a clunker, but that could be a great cheap car for your high-schooler to drive. With this program, the price of a used car is rising drastically.

If you are looking for live entertainment and great drinks, this is the place to be. There are three bars and a restaurant within the casino. Like Vegas style, the bars are opened 24 hours a day, although alcohol is only served until 2 a.m.
The Bar Atmosphere

Prepare yourself with knowledge. Breast cancer is a disease in which cancer cells form in the tissues of the breast. It is considered a heterogeneous disease—differing by individual, age group, and even the kinds of cells within the tumors themselves. Obviously no woman wants to receive this diagnosis, but hearing the words “breast cancer” doesn’t always mean an end. It can be the beginning of learning how to fight, getting the facts, and finding hope.
Community Support
In Niles Michigan, the Niles High School has organized many activities around breast cancer awareness month. The activities include daily announcements: facts and prevention. On October 23rd, the school and football field will be covered with pink ribbons, not to mention the pink attire the staff, football players, cheerleaders, band and colorguard will be wearing for senior night.
Breast Cancer Facts
Below are some facts about breast cancer in the United States.
- Breast cancer incidence in women in the United States is 1 in 8 (about 13%).
- In 2008, an estimated 182,460 new cases of invasive breast cancer are expected to be diagnosed in women in the U.S., along with 67,770 new cases of non-invasive breast cancer.
- About 1,990 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed in men in 2008. Less than 1% of all new breast cancer cases occur in men.
- From 2001 to 2004, breast cancer incidence rates in the U.S. decreased by 3.5% per year. One theory is that this decrease was due to the reduced use of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) by women after the results of a large study, called the Women’s Health Initiative, were published in 2002. These results suggested a connection between HRT and increased breast cancer risk.
- About 40,480 women in the U.S. died in 2008 from breast cancer, though death rates have been decreasing since 1990. These decreases are thought to be the result of treatment advances, earlier detection through screening, and increased awareness.
- For women in the U.S., breast cancer death rates are higher than those for any other cancer besides lung cancer.
- Besides skin cancer, breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among U.S. women. More than 1 in 4 cancers are breast cancer.
- Compared to African American women, white women are slightly more likely to develop breast cancer, but less likely to die of it. One possible reason is that African American women tend to have more aggressive tumors, although why this is the case is not known. Women of other ethnic backgrounds — Asian, Hispanic, and Native American — have a lower risk of developing and dying from breast cancer than white women and African American women.
- As of 2008, there are about 2.5 million women in the U.S. who have survived breast cancer.
- A woman’s risk of breast cancer approximately doubles if she has a first-degree relative (mother, sister, daughter) who has been diagnosed with breast cancer. About 20-30% of women diagnosed with breast cancer have a family history of breast cancer.
- About 5-10% of breast cancers are caused by gene mutations inherited from one’s mother or father. Mutations of the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes are the most common. Women with these mutations have up to an 80% risk of developing breast cancer during their lifetime, and they often are diagnosed at a younger age (before age 50). An increased ovarian cancer risk is also associated with these genetic mutations. Men with a BRCA1 mutation have a 1% risk of developing breast cancer by age 70 and a 6% risk when they have a BRCA2 mutation.
- About 90% of breast cancers are due not to heredity, but to genetic abnormalities that happen as a result of the aging process and life in general.
- The most significant risk factors for breast cancer are gender (being a woman) and age (growing older).

Breast Cancer Risk Factors

- Age: Half of all women diagnosed are over age 65.
- Weight: Being obese or overweight.
- Diet & Lifestyle: Lack of physical activity, a diet high in saturated fat, and alcoholic intake of more than two drinks per day.
- Menstrual & Reproductive History: Early menstruation or late menopause, having your first child at an older age or not having given birth, or taking birth control pills for more than ten years if you are under 35.
- Family & Personal History: A family history of breast cancer—particularly a mother, sister. or a personal history of breast cancer of benign (non-cancer) breast disease.
- Medical & Other Factors: Dense breast tissue (often identified by a mammogram), past radiation therapy to the breast or chest area. A history of hormone treatments—such as estrogen and progesterone, or gene changes— including BRCA1, BRCA2, and others.

Signs and Symptoms
- A change in how the breast or nipple feels
- You may experience nipple tenderness or notice a lump or thickening in or near the breast or in the underarm area.
- A change in how the breast or nipple looks
- This could mean a change in the size or shape of the breast or a nipple that is turned slightly inward. In addition, the skin of the breast, areola or nipple may appear scaly, red or swollen or may have ridges or pitting that resembles the skin of an orange.
Early Detection
- Beginning at age 20: Performing breast self-exams and looking for any signs of change.
- Age 20 to 39: Scheduling clinical breast exams every three years.
- By the age of 40: Having a baseline mammogram and annual clinical breast exams.
- Ages 40 to 49: Having a mammogram every one to two years depending on previous findings.
- Ages 50 and older: Having a mammogram every year.
All Ages:
Recording personal exams, mammograms and doctors’ appointments on a calendar or in a detailed file.
Maintaining a healthy weight, following a low-fat diet, getting regular exercise, quitting smoking, and reducing alcohol consumption.
Self Examination
How to examine your breasts
- Lie down and place your right arm behind your head. The exam is done while lying down, not standing up. This is because when lying down the breast tissue spreads evenly over the chest wall and is as thin as possible, making it much easier to feel all the breast tissue.
- Use the finger pads of the 3 middle fingers on your left hand to feel for lumps in the right breast. Use overlapping dime-sized circular motions of the finger pads to feel the breast tissue.
- Use 3 different levels of pressure to feel all the breast tissue. Light pressure is needed to feel the tissue closest to the skin; medium pressure to feel a little deeper; and firm pressure to feel the tissue closest to the chest and ribs. A firm ridge in the lower curve of each breast is normal. If you’re not sure how hard to press, talk with your doctor or nurse. Use each pressure level to feel the breast tissue before moving on to the next spot.
- Move around the breast in an up and down pattern starting at an imaginary line drawn straight down your side from the underarm and moving across the breast to the middle of the chest bone (sternum or breastbone). Be sure to check the entire breast area going down until you feel only ribs and up to the neck or collar bone (clavicle).
- There is some evidence to suggest that the up-and-down pattern (sometimes called the vertical pattern) is the most effective pattern for covering the entire breast, without missing any breast tissue.
- Repeat the exam on your left breast, using the finger pads of the right hand.
- While standing in front of a mirror with your hands pressing firmly down on your hips, look at your breasts for any changes of size, shape, contour, or dimpling, or redness or scaliness of the nipple or breast skin. (The pressing down on the hips position contracts the chest wall muscles and enhances any breast changes.)
- Examine each underarm while sitting up or standing and with your arm only slightly raised so you can easily feel in this area. Raising your arm straight up tightens the tissue in this area and makes it harder to examine.
This procedure for doing breast self exam is different than in previous recommendations. These changes represent an extensive review of the medical literature and input from an expert advisory group. There is evidence that this position (lying down), area felt, pattern of coverage of the breast, and use of different amounts of pressure increase a woman’s ability to find abnormal areas.
